about

This is an instrumental production music library album made for Ravenwood Music Ltd.
As with Volume 1, apart from drums, some bass guitar and percussion, all the instrument sounds on this record were made originally by a Mellotron or one of its contemporary tape/disc-based playback instruments.
The sounds were picked from GForce’s M-Tron Pro tape libraries including those for the Chamberlin, Optigan, Birotron, and the complete Streetly Tapes collection. This time, each track was built around one of the Optigan rhythm accompaniments. As before, the unedited mono patches were used to preserve the tone and functionality of the original instruments.
Drums were recorded to tape using two AKG D12 microphones at shoulder height just behind the kit. Bass was overdubbed direct through Logic’s Amp Designer. Mix effects and processing used: Waves Kramer Pie compressor, Reel ADT, Abbey Road Reverb Plates & J37 Tape (for echo).

Download includes 4 bonus mixes.

Press & Mentions:

"A creative triumph."
- Louder Than War

"An imaginary soundtrack of sorts, albeit to a 16mm short film in which a bevy of dolly birds sabotages The Changing Of The Guard with ice cream guns. In the rain. The titles say it all: ‘Cygnus Probe’, ‘Parker’s Last Case’, ‘Getaway
Suit’ – odes to both the archaic Mellotron sounds that head Nut Ian Button conjures in his underground lair, and to the art of the instrumental itself."
- Shindig 2018

"A curious love letter to the forgotten (though a host of champions, from individuals to labels, have revalued and showcased their work) composers and mavericks behind some of the best and most odd library music, Mellotron Phase will in time become a cult album itself. As quirky as it is serenading, alternative recalled obscure soundtracks that vaguely recall Jean-Pierre Decerf, Jimmy Harris, Stereolab, Jean-Claude Vannier and even Roy Budd are given a fond awakening."
- Monolith Cocktail 2018

"....A space age bachelor pad groover....a suave sophisticated bossa nova spy theme.......a loping Steptoe And Son melody ......mixed with a soupcon of the sort of melodies created by Ivor Raymonde....a lost sixties library classic, possibly sound tracking a missing Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased) episode. This is another terrific album; I can’t wait for volume 3! "
- Terracope 2018
